Valentine's Day – Movie Review

This movie is better than you might have expected from the rush to release it specifically this weekend. In fact, this movie is as much fun as any megastar-ensemble-cast movie that I have ever seen.

The list of well-known male stars is endless … both McSteamy and McDreamy are here and play major parts … Bradley Cooper of “He’s Just Not That Into You” (another of my favorite recent chick flicks) … Ashton Kutcher plays a major part and really carries it off … Jamie Foxx is as good as ever … Hector Elizondo has a great performance … and Topher Grace is very good … many more.

The women of course are also stellar … Jennifer Garner as foil to both Ashton Kutcher and McDreamy … Anne Hathaway as the trash talking sex-phone-line girl with the big heart is terrific … Kathy Bates plays herself apparently … Queen Latifah is as clever as ever in her part as McSteamy’s agent and Anne Hathway’s forgiving boss …

Shirley McLaine is brilliant as the long-married woman who teaches her husband and Topher’s character what really matters when you decide if you like or love someone … Julia Roberts plays a slightly unusual part for her, but it morphs back to her more typical part (and stay for the credits, there is a really cute out-take where she does an homage … I won’t tell you for which previous part, if it is not obvious to you leave a comment on this post and I will tell you … and again, more women than you can shake a stick at.

The people intertwine constantly, but I found it quite easy to follow and enjoy the subtle connections. The places where they interacted more deeply were quite satisfying …

And of course the real question is whether the resolution to each story arc is what you want in this kind of movie. And I can say that I was pleased with how each of their lives turned out. Exactly what you would hope for if you are sentimental and / or romantic at heart …
